            Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for the support you have given, both in donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the kind words of support. Well, here is the results of the half-way training race to keep you updated on our progress

Barbara and I entered the National Capital 1/2 Marathon (21.1km) in May to test ourselves in a race setting and find out what works and what doesn't. Most things work.

After running in a lot of snow, wind and icey conditions over the winter it was a big thrill to be able to wear shorts on a briefly sunny and warm May day. With over 5,000 people at the start line the competition was expected to be fierce and the adrenalin was pumping. However, the belly dancers at the first kilometer, the jazz band at Carleton U and the singer belting out Broadway show tunes at the Arboretum put things back into proper perspective. This was to be an enjoyable learning experience. It was very enjoyable.

Barbara finished in her determined style in 2:13 while I arrived a little further back at 2:16. Both smiling, really pleased with our race experience and lots of air in our lungs and juice in our legs. Each of us received our Mother's Day rose, our finishing medal, handed in our time chips and eagerly went to the recovery area. That's where they keep all the food.

We did learn a couple of very important points. Although Barbara and I had faithfully done weekly long runs to test everything from food, hydration, gel packs, clothing, and had discussed race day logistics like what time to get up, eat, walk the dogs, where to park, and last minute bathroom breaks we realized we had neglected one thing. How to find each other in the recovery area among thousands of other people. Oops! Got to remember that for Amsterdam where there will be more than 7,000 people. The other thing we learned was about race photographers (see attached). We may be thrilled to have successfully completed the race and want to capture that moment to cherish for years to come but they only want to take your picture as fast as possible so they can catch the next runner coming along. Lesson learned.....the photographer won't wait for you to take the orange slice or seeds out of your mouth before he takes the picture.

Now the marathon training has resumed. There was a couple of weeks rest scheduled after the 1/2 marathon, then some light running for the next two weeks. The heat, and each of us with a nagging injury, has made for a slow start but we continue to accumulate the weekly mileage and use strength training to overcome the injuries. There is a lot of work still ahead but we're taking it one week, one day and one kilometer at a time. And....regularly saying prayers to the running gods!
