Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery
Port Perry, Ontario

A Review (c) Cheryl Lynne Bradley 2006

I had the rare privilege of being invited to participate as a reader at a book launch held at Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gallery in Port Perry, Ontario on August 22, 2006. It was a breath of fresh air to walk into this gallery. I often worry about the atmosphere of a venue where I am going to be reading but my worries ended as soon as I walked in the door of this beautiful, eclectic, original and unique gallery.

Meta4 is the labour of love of 4 local artists: Jennifer, Bonnie, Carey and Birgitta. The gallery is tastefully arrayed with original oil paintings, richly coloured and unique paper mache sculptures, sparkling jewellery (I love sparkly things), warm pottery, glasswork, mixed media, fibre work, basketry and a whole lot more. Everything is custom made and hand crafted by Canadian artists. This gallery is also open to submissions from Canadian artists in all media and offers both a Bridal Registry and Corporate Gifts service.

The Meta4 Gallery is a visually appealing, but never overwhelming, display of high quality custom artwork and craftsmanship. There is a feeling of charm, mystery and understated elegance. It felt both fluid and airy, which is probably why the giant dragonfly graced us with his presence - the bridge between air and water. The earthiness of the pottery, fired into its present beauty, brought the presence of all four elements into play.

Meta4 has an intricate, delicate balance of beauty, restraint and pleasure. Nothing is overdone here, nor is anything muted or subdued. There is an empowering feeling of presence, anticipation and expectation which permeates this space. A more beautiful place for the book launch and more gracious hosts could not be found. Meta4 also offers an extensive array of craft related courses both for the individual, family or youth. There is something for everyone here. Drummaking, Silk Fusion, Wire Jewellry, Art Silver Clay Jewellery, Photography, Painting, Screen MonoPrinting as well as Meditation and Creative Writing. Courses range from 1/2 day workshops to 8 week programs.

If you are ever in the thriving and very pretty town of Port Perry, make it a point to stop by Meta4 or visit them online at www.meta4gallery.ca - I think you'll enjoy your visit.
